Sana López Abellán

For my workshop I use the name ArteSana. This not only refers to my own name and Spanish background in a simple way, it also alludes to the craftsmanship of this trade. ArteSana means craftswoman in Spanish.

In 2006 I graduated in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Leiden. My studies were directed to Latin America and especially the Andes. I have conducted extensive fieldwork in Ecuador.

After my academic education I found it relevant to learn a ‘real’ trade. Fortunately I was able to get a technical course at the Academie of Ben van Helden in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

In September of 2008 I successfully completed this occupational training. As a collective graduation project we designed and made a new chain of office for the mayor of Leiden, the Netherlands.

My own jewellery collection has been permanently exhibited in Galerie Zone, Leiden, The Netherlands since the summer of 2008. On the ‘contact’ page is a list of the days in which I am working in the Galerie.

My jewellery designs are undoubtedly influenced by the love and fascination I have for non-western jewels and adornments in general.

For an impression of my collection see gallery.
